Thoughts On Final Exhibition
So it once again has come to that time of the year where we need to present our work for the tutors. I have hence teamed up with Nick to present our Cinematic Flaneur project. We thought it necessary to have our camera rig on display, especially since Nick put the time in to polishing it up for presentation. Unlike many of our contaminates, we have set up a projector as opposed to using a TV....

Binding Lights ‘Binding Lights’ is a short experimental film about the personification of the Auckland CBD during the late hours of the night. The film itself is an encapsulation what the city is on a personified level, but not through it’s population, but through the static presence of architecture and advertising. Filmed during the late hours of the night, once the majority of...

Post Aural Terrain Thoughts
I found the ‘Aural Terrains’ a difficult project to truly comprehend. Understanding sound proved to be more difficult than I originally imagined, as I never really thought of sound as something outside of traditional music. However over the four weeks I soon discovered that the world of sound is far more expansive than I originally expected. I found the world of sound almost captivating on how it...

Aural Examination This was my final piece for the Aural Terrains project, although it didn’t turn out exactly like I hoped it did create some compelling and interesting noises. It’s just a shame the volume needs to be turned right up to be able to hear it.

Resonating Wine Glass, Tuned Using The Golden Ratio Test This is a small test I did to test out the concept of a series of wine glasses tuned using the golden ratio. Ultimately I think it was a successful concept with the wine glasses singing at the required fidelity that was required. It will be interesting to see how it all fits in with the final composition in which I’ll film tomorrow....

Thoughts On Resonating Wine Glasses
Using wine glasses I plan to create a version of a glass harp, by adding different volumes of water to each glass to create a variety of notes. Once I have created the glass harp I plan on creating an original composition using the golden ratio to structure the piece. With no experience at composing a piece or any perceived musical talent, this may prove difficult. Although for the purposes of...

Intrigued by the world of medicine and technology, young Dutch artist, Karina van Heck’s latest piece of work is a body speaker, which allows you to listen to the sounds of your internal body. Appropriately titled Body Speaker, it uses sound capturing membranes on to the skin to feed internal bodily sounds to a control system, allowing users not only to listen to their internal sounds but remix...

Stray Thoughts On Audio
Over the past couple of weeks we have been experimenting with sound and how it can be used. Within the prior week we have been using circuit bending with the the use of microphones, speakers with a bunch of resistors and capacitors to create unique and interesting sounds. We were then put into groups last Friday to perform an improvised piece together, our team had to gauge off each other using...

Sulfur City Dream This was the noise art I created from my recordings. I didn’t want to edit it too much or over complicate it. I chose for very subtle and extended transitions to create a more gentle narrative. The audio is kind of distorted, which although wasn’t originally planned compliments the content quite well as the audio has been normalized to take away the harshness of the audio as...

Field Recordings For the first week of our second project for the semester we went round in groups using Zoom handy recorders to record intriguing and interesting sounds. Our group went to a beach under the Harbour Bridge on the shore, then to the North Head tunnels. This a field recording from a little beach under the Harbour Bridge, which I then put up on Aporee, a website dedicated solely to...

Film: Dogtooth
My fixation for strange cinema is no secret and I have seen my fair share of completely bizarre films. So here I was, with a film by a Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, Dogtooth, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Dogtooth has to be one of the most completely bizarre and unsettling films I have ever witnessed. Dogtooth follows the story of a father who imprisons his family in...

Film: The Human Centipede
Over that past decade, a new genre of film ‘Torture Porn’ has become prominent to mainstream audiences thanks to the like of films like ‘Saw’. Although explicitly violent torture films aren’t anything particularly new to the industry, they were always considered the bastard child of cinema. Then in 2009 along comes Dutch director Tom Six with ‘The Human Centipede’, which totally breaks down the...

Experimental Video In this video I experimented how you could edit two separate pieces of footage together. I did this by splitting the video up into columns and interlacing the two videos together. I think it would possibly work a bit more effectively if the columns were thinner and the footage was filmed using two different cameras using the apparatus that we’re currently making.  ...

paris, sin nombre In this short film, it focuses on the more mundane day to day happenings of the city, often focusing on more finer details of normally un-noticed aspects of the city. I really enjoyed the use of post production in this film, they manipulate time and orientation of the footage. I personally found by doing this with repetition of the footage it drew my attention of the beauty of...

London, Small World This is a really interesting combination of time lapse and panoramic video. By placing the camera on a special mount the Flaneur can capture a time lapse and a 360 panoramic at the same time. This creates very different dynamic as opposed to the concepts I have been considering early where the camera is moving and filming at real time. By having multiple time lapse shots, I...

Post Robert Thoughts
Our robot all came together on the Thursday night before it was due, half machine, half rabbit, Robert was born. Although I wasn’t totally satisfied with the overall project, I did think what we did finally get implemented worked effectively. I found it very interesting the way our initial concept and the final product ended up as a shell of the original idea. Originally the robot’s...
